After searching the internet and Pinterest for how to get those beautiful chalkboard art prints on my own chalkboard, I was able to find a few, but none that showed pictures. And as we all know, pictures are worth a thousand words. So here’s a tutorial on how to get your own chalkboard looking like something a professional would do (or something you’d find on Pinterest)!

First, print out whatever it is you’d like to write on your chalkboard. You can find a bunch of free printables on Pinterest or purchase one from Etsy for a few dollars. You can even have one custom made! Or, if you don’t see what you’re looking for, type up what you’re dreaming of in cool fonts on a Word program. Just make sure you print it large enough to fill your chalkboard. I have to print out 4 different squares and tape them all together to fill my chalkboard. Then, place your printable face down on your chalkboard.

Using plain ol’ chalk, rub the back of the paper where the writing is. This coats the back of the paper with a thin layer of chalk.

Next, flip your printable over and tape it to your board where you want it to be placed. Take a pen, marker, whatever tool you’d like, and trace over the writing. Press down hard to allow the chalk to be transferred onto your chalkboard. I like to use thick objects for thick writing and smaller objects like pencils to trace over the intricate parts. Whatever you trace over will appear on your chalkboard.

After you have finished tracing, remove the paper. You are now left with a rough outline of your printable!

Finally, using a chalkboard marker, trace over the rough outline. When you’re finished tracing, let the ink dry (this usually takes just a few minutes) and then wipe the entire board down with a dry rag. This will remove the dusty chalk and have your board looking like a piece of art!

*I highly recommend purchasing chalk markers from Chalk Ink. They can also be bought from Amazon. The great thing about these markers is that they wipe off easily with water. I read that a lot of people had to re-paint their chalkboards because they could not completely remove the chalk ink from the previous project. I used their chalk ink cleaner to remove my chalk ink and it came right off, no stripping of the chalkboard paint occurred. Just make sure when purchasing your markers, they are wet-wipe approved!

*There are many different chalk marker ‘tips’ to purchase such as chisel, broad, and thin that will help create different fonts and designs on your board. There are even colored chalk markers available to purchase!
