Logan and I weren’t able to take a trip in February for our 10 year anniversary since he was training for WOBC, so we decided to postpone our trip until June. We would be moving that month and spending several weeks in Florida visiting my family, so the babysitter part was handled! With the help of a travel agent, we booked a trip to a brand new resort in Mexico. Unico is located in the Riviera Maya and is an adults only, all inclusive resort. So with our passports in hand, we hopped aboard a plane for five nights in paradise!

I decided not to bring my fancy camera on this trip since I didn’t want to lug it around, but opted for my GoPro camera instead. It did pretty good for the most part and it was so nice having it fit inside my purse!

The hotel was gorgeous and the customer service was over the top. I mean literally, someone came to grab my plate to set it on the table when I was five feet away from it! They sent champagne up to our room and had the mini bar stocked with our favorite drinks. I think the only negative thing I can say about it was that it was annoying to always need cash on hand for tips (because they were definitely working hard for them!). Here are a few shots of our room after we arrived.

After some food and a quick nap, we headed down to the spa for a couple’s massage. Before the massage, a hostess would escort you into the locker room where you would change and go into a sauna. After the sauna, she then took me to a shower to wash off. Little did I know, cold water came shooting out of about 20 different spouts. Since everyone at the resort spoke Spanish and English was limited, I just assumed that maybe the hot water was out. Judging from her smile when I got out though, maybe not (or maybe it was my squeals). Next up was a steam room (which was my favorite) followed by a cold room filled with ice. I sat down and she rubbed ice over my entire body. I was beginning to notice a trend here. Then it was jacuzzi time. Just when I thought this little experience was over, she then motioned me to a smaller pool. I’m sure you can figure out (just as I did) what this pool would be. I said, “Are you serious?” She smiled and said “Si”. I figured what the heck, and submerged myself into the freezing cold water. She once again giggled as I jumped out. I tried asking her what the hot, cold, hot, cold thing was all about but only heard what I already knew, that the warmth opens up your pores and the cold closes them. All I can say is, it was quite the experience! Here’s a view of the main spa room. Gorgeous, huh?

After asking Logan if he had just experienced the same thing I had (which he had), we enjoyed our couple’s massage followed by a delicious dinner in one of the four main restaurants they had on the property. The next two days were spent lounging by the pool and exploring the resort.

I even managed to drag Logan down to the beach for a stroll.

Here is the view from our room and the main pool where we spent most of our time. The main pool always had music playing and the occasional organized water game, but they also had a quiet pool if you just wanted to relax.

We ate, drank, laid out in the sun, took naps, and ate some more. I had forgotten how much fun it was going out to eat without kids!

On the fourth day, we were tired of sitting around and drove up to the Hard Rock Hotel to let Logan play golf. The weather was great and I was an awesome golf cart driver, if I do say so myself.

On the fifth day, which just so happened to be my 32nd birthday, we went on a Mayan adventure that included snorkeling in an underground cenote, ziplining, and riding ATV’s. I was excited that they had someone there to take photos of us so that I didn’t have to worry about it-happy birthday to me!

First up was the underground cenote. For those that don’t know, a cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. It was a little claustrophobic and eerie, but still pretty cool. I mean, how many people can say they’ve done that?

The camera man took his job very seriously and was determined to get several different shots for us to choose from. We smiled, we kissed, we splashed water on him, and just when I thought it was done, he asked us to make a fishy face. I’m sure you can tell by my expression that I’m like, “you’re killing me, Smalls”, but look at Logan… the man that hates photos is “fish facing” it up!?

After drying off, we headed off to the ziplines! For your viewing pleasure, I have included another one of our awesome photographer directed photos.

Last up was an ATV ride that took us to an open cenote.

I don’t think this photo does it justice. It was so beautiful. The water was chilly, but it was hot and they had a zipline that we could ride into the water. We could have spent all day there!

After the tour, we met back up with our friends and enjoyed the rest of the day by the pool. A few too many drinks were had, but all in all, it was a good birthday!

We woke up the next morning in search of some water and Motrin, but ready to head back home. It was an awesome anniversary and birthday trip that we will never forget! Special thanks to Grandma and KiKi for watching our two kiddos! Until next time, Mexico!
